Law Enforcement Glossary

In order to become a police officer in the province of Quebec, we need a three-year college degree named Police Technology. I'm in my first year. The world of Law Enforcement uses a lot of complicated terms that the public usually don't know. The goal of my glossary is to make these difficult words accessible to the public. After all, the purpose of Law Enforcement officers is to serve all citizens regardless of age, gender, race, religion etc... The glossary shall contain 20 terms that are usually unknown, yet relevant, for the average Joe. Each word will be accompanied by a complete definition. It includes Google's definition of the term, its part of speech, its pronunciation, its translation in French, an example of a sentence where the word can be used and finally, a picture of the term itself. I tried to cherry pick in the Police Technology Glossary words that are both unknown but useful to the public. I invite you to read carefully the glossary. With God's will, it might help you one day! By the way, since a lot of words in my glossary are just legal terms, there won't be an explicit image of them.

autopsy
noun
A postmortem examination to discover the cause of death or the extent of disease.
Example: French anatomist Paul Broca conducted an AUTOPSY on a mute, revealing a lesion or defect on a particular area of the brain.

charge
verb
Accuse (someone) of something, especially an offense under law.
Example: A 32-year-old man has been charged with assault following an altercation with a snow plow driver.

coroner
noun
An official who investigates violent, sudden, or suspicious deaths.
Example: Mohawk Institute residential school survivors request coroner investigation

criminal record
noun
A list of a person's previous criminal convictions.
Example: This is a neccessity when analysisng a suspected motorists blood sample for drugs as the results may have serious consequences as the penalties for driving whilst under the influence of drugs are the same as that for drink driving and the offence will be put on individulas CRIMINAL RECORD and could affect the rest of their lives.

delinquency
noun
Minor crime, especially that committed by young people.
Example: 'Eating badly' has been linked to anti-social behaviour and even juvenile DELINQUENCY.

discretionary power
attributive adjective and noun (they are two different words)
Able to be decided by a particular person or group, rather than being controlled by rules, or relating to the power to make these decisions.
Example: This is highly undesirable in the sense that it gives too much DISCRETIONARY POWER to the court.

Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.
Example: The 'Protection of Women from DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Act' was passed in 2005,.

exhibit
noun
A document, photograph, object, animation, or other device formally introduced as evidence in a legal proceeding.
Example: An exhibit list is prepared in every criminal case to record all exhibits entered into court.

hideout
noun
A hiding place, especially one used by someone who has broken the law.
Example: Owned by Binion's business partner, Dallas mobster Ivy Miller, the real-life gangster home was reportedly used as an underworld hideout and gambling den by Binion and his associates.

hit-and-run
adjective
Denoting or relating to a motor accident in which the vehicle involved does not stop.
Example: Virginia lawmaker Matt Fariss charged in alleged hit-and-run.

hooliganism
noun
violent or rowdy behavior by young troublemakers, typically in a gang.
Example: Boys are more likely to engage in petty theft, vandalism, football HOOLIGANISM, mugging and riot behaviour (Muncie 1989 :62) whilst for girls 'crimes' are more likely to include running away from home, breaking curfew rules and unruly behaviour.

verb
(Of the police) confine (a group of demonstrators or protesters) to a small area, as a method of crowd control during a demonstration.
Example: That same year, police officers KETTELED protesters marching against the acquittal of former police officer Jason Stockley, who fatally shot Anthony Lamar Smith.

Miranda warning
noun
The Miranda warning is a type of notification customarily given by police to criminal suspects in police custody (or in a custodial interrogation) advising them of their right to silence and, in effect, protection from self-incrimination; that is, their right to refuse to answer questions or provide information to law enforcement or other officials. These rights are often referred to as Miranda rights.
Example: Police officers must give the MIRANDA WARNING when they arrest criminal suspects.

A solemn promise, often invoking a divine witness, regarding one's future action or behavior.
Example: She has been betrayed, Jason is indeed an 'OATH-breaker' and a 'guest-deceiver'.

police record
noun
Police Record means any information available in the national register or registers recording data of competent authorities, for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal offences.
Example: Local police records check for a record suspension application. Complete the form and send it by mail to the Section des équipes en renseignement spécialisé at the SPVM.

noun
The institution and conducting of legal proceedings against someone in respect of a criminal charge.
Example: The prosecution had no evidence against Mr. Smith.

remand
verb
Place (a defendant) on bail or in custody, especially when a trial is adjourned.
Example: Mr. Smith was remanded after the trial was canceled.

A famous criminal remanded in custody.
search warrant
noun
A legal document authorizing a police officer or other official to enter and search premises.
Example: The policeman had a warrant to search Mr.Smith's home.

A federal search warrant that was used to search Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home.
theft
noun
The action or crime of stealing.
Example: The client has been in prison several times in the past for THEFT and violence and is at risk of becoming violent when unwell.

warrant
noun
A document issued by a legal or government official authorizing the police or some other body to make an arrest, search premises, or carry out some other action relating to the administration of justice.
Example: One of the main enforcement powers established through the Competition Act 1998 was the power to enter business premises without or under a WARRANT.
